Our vegetable storage bags use 100% organic french terry cotton, grown by the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative, and hand sewn by employee-owned Opportunity Threads, in Valdese, North Carolina.
The damp cloth bags keep moisture-loving vegetables moist and crisp in a breathable and high humidity environment. Moisture slowly evaporates from the surface of the bag to keep both the bag and the vegetables “breathing.” The slightly moist environment of the bag keeps vegetables crisp far longer than vegetables stored in a plastic bag.
Plastic bags and containers keep too much moisture in; sealed plastic does not allow vegetables to breathe. This sets up an environment where ethylene gas concentrates. That promotes rotting. We’ve all picked through slimy spinach or pulled plastic bags from the crisper drawer that are full of limp carrots or yellowed broccoli. Vejibag prevents this type of rotting.
Vejibags establish a moist, breathable environment for your produce. To begin, wet the bag and then wring it out so that it is just damp.
Rinse your vegetables carefully, remove any damaged areas, and then gently shake off any excess water. If you're washing lettuces or greens, there's no need to spin. Let your Vejibag do the work!
Store in the main compartment of your refrigerator or in a slightly opened crisper drawer. When the bag dries out after several days, re-wet slightly by running it briefly under the faucet, vegetables and all.
Turn Vejibags inside out and launder with fragrance free detergent. Best to either air dry on the counter or hang them to dry in the sun. If you use a hot dryer you can expect 10% shrinkage the first time as this is a 100% cotton bag!
If you want to sanitize Vejibags thoroughly let them sit overnight in a solution of 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1/8 cup of household vinegar with enough hot water to cover.
If your bag gets stained you can safely remove most stains with an oxygen bleach or make your own environmentally friendly stain remover solution with 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 2 tablespoons of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda. Add enough hot water to the hydrogen peroxide/washing soda solution to cover bag and let sit 24 hours.
